March Madness Day 13: Drake - Views

Cover Art for Drake's "Views" Album

Drake. You know who he is, I know who he is, he needs no introduction.

Lets’s get straight to it…

1. Keep the Family Close

Powerful opener, I really dig this. The Drums hit HARD, and Drake comes out the gate singing, but the production is what saves this song in the end. Drake is just there…meaning he’s a presence on the song but the production is what really carries him on the song. Definitely a highlight off the album right out the gate. Drake knows how to start off his fucking albums and I can add this to the list of explosive openers on Drake albums.

2. 9

This beat is lazy in my opinion, not very interesting, but its actually the opposite from the first track. Drake himself is the most interesting thing about this song. But in the end, even Drake couldn’t save this. Not mediocre, but meh, not memorable either. Would make for some great background music though. Something to have on but not pay attention to.

3. U With Me?

Only on the 3rd track and my mind is already wandering, not a good sign. “You toyin with it like happy meal” would be the most corny line I’ve heard all year but after“bleached asshole” I can deal with it. It’s not until the last 3rd of the track that Drake finally switches things up with an unexpected crooning moment. Not bad. But the majority of the song just isn’t as memorable as the last 3rd of the song. Meh.

4. Feel No Ways

I really dig the beat, but holy shit is Drake the king of unmemorable, it just feels like he’s repeating the same lines over and over. Not a terrible song by any  means, but these songs are beginning to bleed together and it’s only the 4th track.

5. Hype

Drake finally smacks me awake with this banger. This shit hot, as you can tell, hype has me hype. I really fuck with this. Another highlight on this album.Oh and the line

“VIEWS ALREADY A CLASSIC”

confirms Drake is a HHH user.

6. Weston Road Flows

I remember someone saying that this was gonna be the best song Views just based off of looking at the track list and fuck they were RIGHT. Heard this during the OVO live stream of this album. And damn, I was right, this is  my favorite track on the album its so fucking smooth. The beat is heavenly and Drake holds my attention. Drake even sneaks in a “What are those” reference and the song is so good that I can’t help but smile every time I hear it. This shit is great. If you listen to any one song off of “Views” listen to this one. It’s fucking great. This is going in my top favorite Drake songs of all time. Yeah, I think it’s that good. Future classic song in my opinion.

7. Redemption

Drake gets back on his classic “Heartbreak Drake” type shit. This the Drake that spawned all the “Don’t listen to Drake while drunk unless you wanna end up calling your ex” memes and jokes and I can’t say I hate it, cause I don’t. I can see myself 3 AM bumping this shit I’m not gonna lie. But can I honestly say this song is great? No. Its pretty average “Take Care”-esque Drake, but I don’t mind it. I think it’s cool for what it is.

8. With You (feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR)

Too repetitive for my taste. Feels like it would be great when played live but, this is  one of my least favorite tracks on the album. Bleh.

9. Faithful (feat. Pimp C & dvsn)

That Pimp C verse is So. Fuckin. Outta. Place. Like damn you hear Pimp’s southern gutter voice and here comes Drake with his light airy singing and it’s like damn, I thought I was listening to UGK for a second with Pimp all up in the intro. Not bad, but once again, these melancholic songs I’m just not fucking with like that. They’re good, and if you play them enough I can see how you would love them, but it’s a no from me. And of course Drake drops some signature corny lines and its just ughhhh why Drizzy? [Insert Ghostwriting joke here]

10. Still Here

[DJ Khaled Voice] ANOTHER 1! This shit slaps, like its not a top tier banger but in the context of this album its a nice change of pace from the slow melancholic songs on here. Drake drops some memorable lines like

“I make people pay me for my time”

which a great flex and that little flow switch up with the “Hallelujah , Hallelujah” was pretty nice too. However, upon repeated listens Drake’s crooning is lazy. When Drake starts stretching his enunciation on words, it gets annoying, for example when he goes “YOUUUUU” it can really irritate the nerves, or at least it irritated mine at times. It’s like he ran out of lyrics and wanted the song to be longer so he did what Drake does and held that note.

11. Controlla

I didn’t hear it as a single when it first dropped so this my first time hearing it in the context of the album and wow, I’m impressed. Drake does the dancehall vibe pretty well. This and “One Dance” will go UP at a party guaranteed. I hope this gets big on the radio I’m really digging this. Oh and that Beanie Man sample HELL YEAH. As someone who grew up on this music, I’m glad Drake is popularizing this sound. After repeated listens however, this song doesn’t really hit as hard the following track “One Dance” I don’t know, it feels weak, like the beat needs more kick, more “oomph” if you will. It’s good, but this feels like a throwaway track the more and more I listen to it. This song should’ve stayed a single now that I think about it.

12. One Dance (feat. Wiz Kid & Kyla)

Smart move putting these tracks back to back.  Now THIS, is what I’m talking about, “One Dance” is “Controlla” if “Controlla” worked out, got beefed up and was ready to hit the dance floor. What I’m saying is, the beat is harder hitting, more attention grabbing, Drake goes into Dancehall mode more naturally in this song in my opinion and overall the song is more memorable and more catchy than “Controlla” I hadn’t heard this song prior to this album so its pretty fucking great hearing it in the context of the album. Just fun dance music. Its what Drake does best, and he does it thoroughly like on “One Dance” I gotta love it. Wish I could see him perform this live but ALL 3 nights in L.A. are sold out lmao oh well its just the nature of the beast. Drake is hot in these streets fuck what you heard.

13. Grammys (feat. Future)

3 bangers now. Drake is on his “Worst Behavior” flow on this one. I fuck with it. This song is a favorite of mine. So memorable.

“TOP 5 TOP 5 TOP 5”

Oh and as for  Future he does his thing too. I don’t remember any lines aside from “they gon’ think I won a grammy” which apparently is like 50% of  Future’s lyrics on this song lol, but what really counts on this song is his FLOW and it was on point on this song and it matches the energy of the beat, which, is all I can really ask from Future at the end of the day.

14. Childs Play

When I first heard this song on the OVO live stream, I declared it as not being memorable and well…yeah, I still hold this sentiment. The production is booming and it has a real nice vibe but I just have no urge or desire to listen to this again. Listen folks, I can’t force myself to love these songs. They’re just alright. Just okay. Next.

15. Pop Style

Somehow avoided hearing this song as a single. Apparently Jay Z and KanYe were removed due to certain reasons, I’m not sure which but if you really want to find out why than remember, google is your friend. Anyway, I don’t think the “Chaining Tatum” line is THAT bad. (Once again, award for worse line of the year goes to Kanye on FSMH Pt. 1) I feel like this song is just painfully average to be completely honest. Nothing grabs me on this song and Drake doesn’t even sound 100% on this song. It’s like he was sleeping or getting drunk and just said ” Hol’ Up lemme record a song real quick” just nah fam, I ain’t fucking with this.

16. Too Good (feat. Rihanna)

Remember the titular track “Take Care” off of Drake’s 2011 album? Yeah, this is its spiritual successor. But I really dig the upbeat vibe and the subtle guitar in the beat. I fuck with this. But I can’t see myself bumping this just casually you know? I’ll put this on a party playlist or something, but…you know what? This is pretty good. I love the dancehall vibes and shit. Its a favorite of mine.

17. Summers Over Interlude

When I first heard this song on the OVO live stream, I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the guitar. Holy shit, I know this an interlude but this is TOO short. Just give me more of that guitar and I believe that is Majid Al Maskati on the vocals. This shit is so fucking smooth and chill. Definitely a top 5 song on this album. Yeah, I think it’s THAT good.

18. Fire & Desire

Remember track 7 “Redemption”? Yeah, Heartbreak Drake is back on this one. Nice and slow and I ain’t mad at it, but this shit is directed and intended for women which, isn’t a bad thing. Drake gotta sell records and appealing to girls has always been Drake’s bread and butter. Put this on when you got a girl over or when its 3 AM and you’re drunk and you’re feeling some type of way, what I’m saying is, its cool for what it is, but I personally won’t be coming back to this song anytime soon. It just ain’t for me. ¯\(ツ)/¯

19. Views

Nice. THIS is the Drake I wanted to hear all throughout the album, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Drake is a mixture of introspective, witty, AND triumphant on this track and I love it. When I first heard this song on the OVO live stream I KNEW this shit would be a favorite of mine. And it is. A great closing to the album. A bunch of memorable one liners too like

“Niggas quick to double cross like both of us Christian”

or

“If I was you, I wouldn’t like me either”

which is hilarious to me. Drake confirmed /r/me_irl user lol but seriously great track to close out with.

Overall, as much as it pains me to say it, “Views” did NOT live up to the hype surrounding it. I know there are a lot of people who swear by this album and really hold the sentiment that Drake gave us something special with “Views”. But in all honesty, all I can say is “meh” the album has its moments. Songs like “Weston Road Flows” “Views” and “One Dance” are some of the albums best moments. I’m not going to lie, I prefer rapping Drake over singing Drake. I believe If Drake really wants to, he should go ahead and flat out make a straight R&B album cause I feel that’s what he really wants to do. But this whole 80% Singing 20% rapping just isn’t doing for me. Too many melancholic songs that start to sound the same to me after a couple listens. It’s not until the more upbeat songs like “Hype” “Still Here” and “Grammys” that my full attention is back on Drake. This is too “Take Care” esque for me and while “Take Care” had some strong moments. “Views” feels like a weaker “Take Care”. Too much fat, not enough meat on this project.

What’s the most frustrating about this album is that it’s just ok not great and not terrible. And on the internet everything is black and white. If you criticize something, you must automatically hate everything about the project and you must think it’s the worse thing since Hitler and if you praise it, you must automatically think it’s a classic “10/10 GOAT AOTY” and that just isn’t the case with “Views” as “Views” is a subtle shade of gray, middle of the road, just okay. All of Drake’s styles are on here “The singing  about heartbreak Drake” “The rapping Drake” ” The Hotline Bling this-song-will-be-played-a-million-and-one-times-on-the-radio Drake” but I don’t feel he does any of those styles particularly excellently on “Views” it’s all just pretty good, pretty average, pretty mediocre, pretty standard Drake. After repeated listens to “Views” I only really fuck with 9 of the 20 songs on here. I know people swear Drake struck gold and gave us something that’s really great and special (looking at you, HHH) but “Views” just isn’t that. It’s just okay and largely forgettable in my humble opinion. Drake is like “In n Out Burger” (a really popular fast food burger joint), just bland enough to appeal to the average person whilst retaining some sort of flavor and yeah, I realize this album is for people who like all sides of Drake, like sort of like a Drake sampling dish where there’s a little bit of every style on here but the problem is that no style is thoroughly executed. Like on “Take Care” “Heartbreak Drake” was thoroughly executed and done well while on 2015’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late “the Rapping over banger beats Drake” was thoroughly executed and well done. On “Views” each style is revisited but none are truly mastered. “Views” get’s a 6/10 from me.

Favorite Track(s): Keep the Family Close, Hype, Weston Road Flows, Redemption, One Dance, Grammys, Summers Over Interlude, Too Good, Views

Least Favorite Track(s): With You, Pop Style

Some cool songs but “Views” does more missing than hitting, Drake does what he does but after repeated listens? Nah. This was Drake’s chance to truly give us something special and he played it safe, which cost him more in the end. I remember seeing a comment that said “I went in expecting Drake’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and I got Late Registration instead” and this is a pretty great analogy for how I feel. In the end, I feel “Views” was made for the live shows and the girls to sing along to for the most part, and that’s okay, it’s not a bad thing. But it ain’t for me.

Listen to Drake's "Views" here.
